AAIP Farm Stream
A farmer's stream rather than an investor's. Assessment turns on hands-on production management, not capital.
This is a farmer’s stream, not an investor’s stream. The assessment turns on whether you have personally managed farm production and will do so in Alberta. Capital without an operating record does not fit.
It is also unusual among Alberta’s entrepreneur pathways in having no Expression of Interest system and no points grid. You apply directly, and the file is judged on your farm management record, your financial capacity, and the quality of the farm business plan, assessed jointly with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation.
Core requirements
| Requirement | Threshold |
|---|---|
| Investment | CAD $500,000 minimum of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta. The AAIP may require evidence of capacity to invest more. |
| Net worth | CAD $500,000 minimum, or confirmed ability to access a similar amount, including proof that a Canadian financial institution is willing to finance the operation. |
| Farm management skills | Documented through education and training, work experience, and the financial records of an existing farm business you own or operate. |
| Business plan | A detailed proposal covering your investment intentions and the farming operation, reviewed independently with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. |
| Business type | Primary production only, crop or livestock. Proposals are prioritized where they show growth opportunity against Alberta’s agri-food targets. |
| Interview | You may be required to attend an in-person interview with a Government of Alberta representative. |
What farm management experience means here
The AAIP assesses whether you have actually run a farm, not merely invested in one. Strong files document a multi-year operating history: ownership or management of an existing farm, production records, financial statements showing farm income, relevant agricultural education, and familiarity with the type of production proposed for Alberta. The closer your existing operation is to the proposed Alberta operation in commodity, scale, and method, the more credible the plan.
The business plan carries the file
With no points grid, the assessment turns substantially on the plan itself: commodity and production model, land acquisition or lease strategy, capital expenditure schedule, market channels, financial projections, and contribution to Alberta’s agri-food growth targets. Generic or under-researched plans are a common reason for decline. If an application is declined, a Request for Reconsideration may be submitted within 30 calendar days, but reconsideration cannot introduce new evidence.
How the process works
- Develop the farm business plan and assemble evidence of your management record and financial capacity.
- Assemble and submit the application. AAIP and IRCC forms, the application fee, and the complete package mailed to the AAIP. There is no EOI stage, and incomplete applications are declined.
- Assessment and interview, conducted with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation.
- Nomination, with priority to applications showing the greatest growth opportunity for the province’s agri-food sector.
- Establish the operation. Move to Alberta, complete the qualifying investment, and directly manage the farm.
- Permanent residence under the Provincial Nominee Class for you and your dependent family members.
Practical considerations
- The $500,000 must go into a real operating farm, meaning land, equipment, livestock, and inputs. It is not a fee or a deposit.
- Confirmed financing from a Canadian financial institution can substitute in part for cash on hand when demonstrating access to funds. Engage a lender early if the capital plan depends on it.
- Because there is no points competition, timing pressure is lower than in EOI streams, but nomination volumes are limited by the annual allocation and provincial priorities.
- Succession purchases of existing Alberta farms are common in practice, and require the same management evidence plus sound valuation and due diligence.
