AAIP Graduate Entrepreneur Stream
For international graduates of Alberta institutions holding a post-graduation work permit. No minimum net worth or fixed investment.
This is one of the more flexible entrepreneur pathways in Canada. There is no minimum net worth and no fixed investment requirement, and the business can be anywhere in Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton. For an international graduate of an Alberta institution holding a post-graduation work permit, it is often the most direct route available.
The trade-offs are a high language bar and competitive selection. CLB 7 in all four abilities is the highest of any Alberta entrepreneur stream, and Expressions of Interest are ranked on a 125-point grid from which only the strongest are invited.

The established-business pathway
If you already own and operate an Alberta business and it has been running for at least a year immediately before you submit the EOI, no further operating period is required after applying. Eligible candidates are nominated after the Business Application and simply continue operating while IRCC processes the permanent residence application.
For a graduate already running a business on a post-graduation work permit, this is one of the faster entrepreneur routes to nomination in the country. It is worth gathering clean operating evidence early: registrations, financial statements, payroll records, and the lease.
How the 125-point grid works
Scoring splits into three groups. Business establishment factors carry up to 75 points, covering management and ownership experience, economic benefit, and total investment. Human capital carries up to 25 for language and Alberta education. Adaptability carries up to 25 for age, a spouse’s Alberta employment, study or language, and Alberta relatives.
Economic benefit points reward priority sectors including energy, agriculture, technology, aviation and aerospace, and financial services, along with job creation for non-relatives and a rural location outside the two major metropolitan areas.
Practical considerations
- Language is the most efficient lever. CLB 7 earns 5 of 15 available language points while CLB 9 earns all 15. Retesting is often the single fastest way to strengthen an EOI.
- The anti-succession rules are strict. Businesses bought from relatives, from recent AAIP candidates, or that changed hands within the past three years are excluded.
- The post-graduation work permit must be valid at EOI submission, so plan the EOI early in the permit’s life to leave room for the later stages.
- This is the only Alberta entrepreneur stream fully open to Calgary and Edmonton businesses, though a rural location still earns extra points.
