Family Reunification

Family reunification is an objective of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the law governing immigration to Canada.

While it’s important for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to reunite family members in Canada, you need to provide IRCC with the right content, so that they understand what reuniting with your family in Canada means to you.

We’ll make sure that your application and the supporting documents tell the right, meaningful, and impactful story, so that you can avoid processing delays.

What does family reunification mean?

Family reunification is one of the core pillars of Canada’s immigration system, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor certain relatives for permanent residence.

These applications are assessed based on strict legal requirements, including the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsor’s ability to provide financial support.

Who can sponsor a family member?

You can sponsor your family member if you,

·      Are over 18 years;

·      Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;

·      Show that you’re not receiving social assistance other than disability; and

·      Show that you can provide for the basic needs for the person you’re sponsoring.

Sponsoring a family member is a formal legal undertaking.

Sponsors must agree to financially support their family member for a specified period of time and may be responsible for repaying any social assistance the sponsored person receives during that period.

Who can I sponsor?

You can sponsor your,

·      Spouse or common-law partner ;

·      Children and dependents; and

·      Parents and grandparents.

Not all relationships automatically qualify for sponsorship.

Immigration officers carefully assess whether a relationship is genuine and not entered into primarily for immigration purposes. Applications may be refused where there are concerns about the authenticity of the relationship or insufficient supporting evidence.

Strong applications require evidence

Successful family sponsorship applications require detailed documentation, including proof of the relationship, financial information, and supporting records that demonstrate the history and genuineness of the relationship. Incomplete or weak applications can result in delays or refusals.

Family sponsorship applications may be refused for reasons, such as insufficient proof of relationship, inconsistencies in the application, failure to meet financial requirements, or concerns about misrepresentation.

Addressing these issues in advance can significantly improve the likelihood of approval.

Processing times

Processing times vary depending on the type of application.

Spousal and dependent child sponsorship applications are often processed within approximately 12 months, while applications for parents and grandparents may take significantly longer due to limited intake and high demand.
