Study Permits

Getting a post-secondary degree (in other words, a university degree) in Canada can be an effective first step in obtaining permanent residence.

What is a study permit?

A study permit is a legal document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most international students require a study permit before entering Canada, and the application must demonstrate that you meet strict financial, academic, and immigration requirements.

If you have a post-secondary degree from a Canadian university, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence under Express Entry or the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

While studying in Canada can be a strong pathway to permanent residence, it’s not automatic. Study permit applications are carefully assessed, and refusal rates can be high if the application doesn’t clearly demonstrate genuine study intent, financial capacity, and ties to your home country.

You can also work off campus for up to 20 hours per week while you’re enrolled as an international student at a university in Canada.

Why study permit applications get refused

Many study permit applications are refused due to issues such as weak statements of purpose, insufficient proof of funds, unclear career plans, or concerns that the applicant may not leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.

Addressing these concerns proactively is critical to improving approval chances.

Who is this for

Our study permit services are ideal for individuals who are serious about studying in Canada and may also be considering long-term immigration options, including work permits and permanent residence.

Post-Graduation Work Permit

After you complete your post-secondary degree, you may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), which can allow you to stay and work in Canada for up to 3 years.

With a PGWP, you can get a job with any employer, and if you work for 1,560 hours, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence under Express Entry.

And if you complete a master’s degree or PhD, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence under PNP, as well as apply for a PGWP, so that you can work and stay in Canada while your permanent residence application is processed.

Can I bring my spouse or partner and my minor children to Canada?

Yes, while you’re a student in Canada, you may bring your spouse or partner and your minor children to Canada, so that all of you can be together.

Your spouse or partner can either apply for a study permit or an open work permit, so that they can either study or work in Canada, and your minor children can apply for study permits.
